Are You a Beginning or Intermediate Knitter? This Project for Knit Pouches Might Be Up Your Alley!

Let’s face it – we’ve all been getting crafty the past year, as COVID-19 restrictions kept us inside. Whether you picked up some light woodworking or a bit of calligraphy, it never hurts to add another specialized craft to your list of hobbies. This DIY Project for a Knit Pouch, courtesy of Martha Stewart’s website, is perfect for any beginner. It even makes a great intermediate activity, if you consider yourself more skilled in working with fabric and other textiles. Check out all the materials and instructions below, as provided by The Heights at Park Row Apartments!

Materials for Purse

• U.S. size 6 needle
• U.S. size 8 needle
• Medium-weight yarn
• 1/4 yard lightweight cotton
• Zipper

Materials for Case

• Lightweight yarn

Instructions:

1. Knit an 8-by-11-inch rectangle in stockinette. Knit one row, purl next. Repeat.
2. Fold in half, right sides facing. Sew sides together with a yarn needle. Turn right side out, then steam flat with an iron.
3. Unzip the zipper, which should be large enough to fit the pouch opening, and pin it inside the pouch. Hand-sew in place with sturdy thread.
4. For liner, cut an 8-by-13-inch piece of thin cotton fabric. Fold-down short ends 1 inch, wrong sides facing, then iron to crease. Fold the cloth in half, end to end, with right sides facing. Sew along sides, using a 1/4-inch seam allowance. Do not turn inside out.
5. Place liner in pouch and whipstitch folded ends to zipper tape directly under zipper's teeth. Add a tassel to the zipper, if desired.
6. Knit 4-by-15-inch rectangle in stockinette. Fold in half with right sides facing and sew sides together with yarn needle. Turn right side out and steam- iron flat. Sew snap inside, then add button.
