Donuts – or doughnuts – are pretty much a year-round food in every city, but especially in Houston, Texas, which has been home to national doughnut company and coffeehouse chain, Shipley Do-Nuts, since 1936. Shipley isn’t the end-all-be-all of H-Town’s donut offerings, however. Fortunately for enthusiasts of glazed perfection, Bayou City has plenty of excellent options for donuts— glazed, cake, filled, powdered, twists, holes, and more. Check out some of our favorites below:
Glazed The Doughnut Café – 1333Old Spanish Trail, Houston, TX 77054
Glazed The Doughnut Café, located by the Texas Medical Center, holds the proud title for Houston’s First Family-Owned and Operated, 24-Hour Specialty Doughnut Café. Pretty impressive stuff, huh? Well, prepare yourself to be way more impressed. Glazed The Doughnut Café also offers an incredible selection of glazed, cake, and filled donuts with toppings, such as Captain Crunch to fillings, like churro. You can even devour a sandwich made out of two of their glazed donuts, such as their Breakfast Sausage or Bacon Grilled Cheese. It sounds so delicious that our mouths are already watering!
Peña’s Donut Heaven & Grill – 11601 Shadow Creek Parkway, #103, Pearland, TX 77584
If you’re up to taking a trip to South Houston – around the Pearland, to be specific – you’ll want to make a stop at Peña’s Donut Heaven & Grill for donuts, kolaches, or breakfast plates and sandwiches. Glazed, powdered, or filled – Peña’s has it all, and they aren’t slowing down any time soon! Not a fan of traditional-style donuts? You can choose from an array of breakfast pastries to go with your eggs and bacon, including muffins, turnovers, bear claws, and cinnamon rolls. Plus, Peña’s also serves up a killer cronut – a combination of a croissant and a doughnut – with your choice of Cream Cheese, Strawberry, or Oreo!
Hugs & Donuts –1901 N Shepherd Drive, #4, Houston, TX 77008
What’s better than a hug? Hm, maybe something also warm and welcoming, like a donut? Although it’s ill-advised to hug others outside of your Quarantine Bubble, Hugs & Donuts in the historic Houston Heights neighborhood runs with that concept of delicious friendliness. Each of their donuts is tiered by price. There’s Simple Donuts, Something Extra Donuts, and Adventurous Donuts, with extravagant flavors like Tres Leches, Strawberry Shortcake, and Biscoff Cookie Butter. Like Peña’s, you’ll also find kolaches here, from BBQ and Jalapeño Popper to Sweet Potato Hash. You can’t go wrong with any choice at Hugs & Donuts.
